Youth Programs

Please see News & Views for more information regarding these programs or call the Youth Room at 248/650-7140.  Youth programs are open only to residents of Rochester, Rochester Hills or Oakland Township.  Special thanks to the Friends of the Rochester Hills Public Library for funding all the Youth Programs.

Storytime
Each child registering for storytime must have his/her own library card.  Applications are available online at www.rhpl.org/getslibrarycard1.html.  Please visit the library’s website at www.rhpl.org, click on the Schedule of Events to locate the storytime day and time you desire or come into the youth area to register online.  Storytimes are available for children birth through age 5 who resides in Rochester , Rochester Hills or Oakland Township .  Due to the popularity of these programs, one storytime per child, please make necessary child care arrangements for older or younger siblings.

Winter Session registration begins Monday, January 7 with storytimes beginning the following week, for a 4 week session.  The spring registration will begin on Monday, February 25, storytimes beginning the following week, for 3 week session.

Mother Goose (birth to walkers plus caregiver)

Toddletime (walkers to 23 months  plus caregiver)

Terrific Twos (2 year olds plus caregiver)

Saturday Stories

Stop by once a month to hear great new stories or familiar, much loved stories as well as enjoy songs, dance and fun!  No registration is required.

Evening Storytime
All Ages   Thursdays, December 13, January 10 and February 14 
7 p.m., Story Room
Join us for an evening filled with stories, songs and fun!  Bring a blanket, pillow or animal friend.  Pajamas aren’t required, but registration is!  Online registration begins one week prior to the program. 

PAWS for Reading with Lucy and Annabelle
Wednesday evenings   6:30 – 8:00 p.m.
Youth Room
If you have not visited the library on Wednesday night you are missing a great treat!  Liz Buchheister, Rochester Hills Public Library volunteer, and her specially trained Newfoundlands , Lucy and Annabelle visit the library each Wednesday night to help young people practice their reading.

Annabelle and her sister, Lucy, trained therapy dogs, stretch out on beanbag chairs and are surrounded by books.  Children join Annabelle or Lucy and Liz their trainer in order to practice their reading.  Children can sign-up in advance for an appointment, approximately 15 minutes in length.  Residents may make an appointment in person at the Youth Services Desk, or call: 248 650-7140 to schedule a PAWS for Reading session.  Due to the popularity of this program appointments do fill quickly.

Story Program for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing
2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month
6:30 p.m., Story Room
  All Ages
This specially designed program is provided by the Ephphatha Lutheran Mission Society.  Each program will be presented in American Sign Language and voiced for deaf and hard of hearing children and children of deaf adults.  Please call the youth services desk at 248 650-7140 for additional information.  There will be no program on December 26, 2007.

Movie @ the Library:  Ratatouille
Saturday, December 22
  11 a.m.  Multipurpose Room
All Ages
Remy is a rat, constantly risking life in an expensive French restaurant because of his love of good food, as well as a desire to become a chef. His father and brother do not approve, and would rather stick to the normal rat life of eating garbage.  Bring your favorite pillow or blanket and settle down to watch Ratatouille on the library big screen.  Bring your favorite juice box or water and we will provide the snack.  Online registration will begin December 10. 

Genot Picor presents The French Voyageur’s Winter Celebrations
Wednesday, December 26
7-8 p.m., Multipurpose Room
  All ages
300 years ago when the French explored the wilderness around the Great Lakes , they brought their songs, stories and holiday traditions with them and also learned the culture of the people they found living there. Genot Picor will bring a sampling of these cultures to Rochester . He has fun stories, songs and dances demonstrating the importance of the New Year holiday.  Get ready to sing, howl, move your feet, clap your hands and celebrate with your whole family! Online registration begins Monday, December 17.

Frosty’s Magical Birthday Party

Even snowmen have birthday parties, so be sure to join in the fun!  Rick Morse will entertain you with magic, puppets and all sorts of fun planned especially to celebrate Frosty’s birthday.  Online registration begins Friday, December 7.

Richard Paul, the Puppet Guy

If your funny bone is working you won’t want to miss the Kiddie Variety Show featuring ventriloquist Richard Paul and his looney sidekick Bosco Bird. Online registration begins January 4.

The Music Lady                      
Friday, February 8, 2008, 10:30-11:15 a.m.
Beverly Meyer is back with another blockbuster event.  With a combination of stories, songs and a little help from her puppet friends and her audience, the Music Lady will delight preschoolers and their parents!  Online registration begins February 1.

Santa’s Storytime
Saturday, December 8, 10:30-11:30 a.m.   Multipurpose Room
That’s right!  Santa himself will pay an early visit to Rochester and he’ll lead the group in songs, tell stories and even pose for a picture with you.  Parents don’t forget the camera!  Online registration begins December 1.

Unity Walk
Monday, January 21, 3:30 p.m.   Multipurpose Room
The Rochester Community Schools is sponsoring a community Unity Walk in honor of the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  The walk will begin at the library with kick-off performances by RCS’s students and conclude at the Administration Center .  Following the planning of a Peace Pole, participants will gather in the Harrison Room for a brief keynote address, musical performances and refreshments.  For more information, please call 248-726-3127.

Preschool Fair

Parents are invited to drop in and visit with representatives of local preschools and day care centers who will bring information about their programs and be on hand to answer questions.  No registration required.

Cartooning & Manga Workshop
Starring Mark Crilley, creator of Akiko

Meet author and illustrator Mark Crilley, creator of some of your favorite anime heroes:  Akiko, Billy Clikk and Miki Falls .  Learn cartooning techniques and tricks, see how he creates his illustrations and comes up with his unique storylines.  Online registration is required and begins February 9.

Wee Read Parent Workshop
Family Science Sensation
Saturday, January 19

Adults
Parents and caregivers of preschool children are invited to discover the amazing world of science with early childhood specialist, Suzanne Ranspach.  A variety of exciting home activities and routines are introduced with an emphasis on creative exploration and skill development.  Participants will have the opportunity to create a project or two and a parent science packet will be provided.  Online registration begins Saturday, January 9.  This workshop is funded by a Target Community Grants.  

A Hatful of Seuss

All Ages
Join in the celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday as we enjoy some of our favorite stories, songs and activities.  Online registration will begin on Saturday, February 23.

Window Painting

Show us your creativity and artistic talents by painting “winter-scapes” on library windows.  Paint provided. You will be working in groups, so bring your friends, sketches and ideas.  This is your chance to get your work on display! Be a Gender Defender!
