Reads From the Road
The
Tenderness of Wolves by Stef Penny
European immigrants living on the 19th century Canadian frontier in frigid isolation is the setting for this haunting debut novel. This is a murder mystery with many plot twists that involve the native population, corporate greed, archeology, and of course a little romance. It is a novel that reveals complex human desires, motivations, and relationships. A great read for cold winter nights!

Creating portraits of
small town life is nothing new to Richard Russo but this may be his best

Loving
Frank: A Novel by Nancy Horan
A
first novel that fictionalizes the life of Mamah Borthwick Cheney (in fact
Mamah was the real life love of Frank Lloyd Wright).
The book explores the relationship of the two lovers as they cope
with their own failed marriages and the struggles and restrictions they
face in their lifestyle choices during the early 20th century.
A good part of the story is given to the personality and intellect
of Wright. A compelling love
story that will resonate with Frank Lloyd Wright fans
Luncheon
of the Boating Party by Susan Vreeland.
Susan Vreeland writes a
beautiful portrayal of Renoir painting his masterpiece ‘Luncheon of the
Boating Party’. Through the
narration of Renoir and seven of his models, the reader feels like they
have stepped back in time when the great artists of Paris were painting.
This book is a masterpiece in itself.

The
Archivist’s Story by Travis Holland
A
debut novel from another University of Michigan graduate. Holland’s
tale deals with governmental censorship in 1939 Moscow.
A former literature professor secures work as an archivist after
losing his teaching job. His
job is to weed the collected manuscripts of writers who were not approved
by the government. The story
is full of tragedies (wife is killed in train wreck, mother with a brain
tumor, fired in disgrace from his teaching position) and sorrow, but hope
is realized in the mission of the main character—a wonderfully written
book.
