It’s Been a Busy Year for the Rochester Junior Woman’s Club!

Rochester, Michigan
September 17
, 2012

The Rochester Junior Woman’s Club has had a busy year! From September to June the club donated more than $29,000.00 to charitable organizations, they provided more than 5,000 hands-on volunteer hours to the community and they managed to have a little fun in the process as well!

Their fundraising year started off in early September with the Art and Apples Festival. Club members Deb Jones and Deb Mohre co-chaired the food tent where the club’s signature Apple Blossoms and Fresh Squeezed Lemonade were sold to raise funds for the Paint Creek Center for the Arts. A few weeks later, the club held their 13th annual Lobster Boil on September 24th. . Chaired by members Katie Kamman and Nicole Maiga, more than 1300 lobsters were sold to raise funds for Avon Players, Friends of Dinosaur Hill, Rochester Symphony Orchestra (RSO) and the OPC.  The end of the year brought their annual Christmas Auction, chaired by club members Nancy Kamman and Toni Wiley, which raised $1500 for Rochester Area Neighborhood House.

The club’s Emeritus members kicked off the New Year with their 20th annual Card Party in February at Rivercrest, raising $1500 for Crittenton Hospital’s Camisole Program. This was followed in March when they hosted their annual “Spring Highlights’ Luncheon and Shopping Boutique at the Royal Park Hotel. Chaired by club members Marge Friederichs and Deb Panter, they raised additional funds for the Avon Players, Friends of Dinosaur Hill and Rochester Symphony Orchestra (RSO).

In May, the club presented two $500 scholarships, through the Community Foundation of Greater Rochester, to Kendra Harding from Rochester Adams High School and Jenna Fedewa from Stoney Creek High School. And, in June they finished their club year by participating in the Rochester Relay for Life where they raised more than $5,500 for the American Cancer Society

But, that wasn’t all for the members of RJWC!  If all of the check writing didn’t keep them busy enough, they also provided countless hands-on hours to other local organizations including: hosting exhibition openings at Paint Creek Center for the Arts, serving meals and assisting a special events at the Older Persons Commission including their “Sock Hop” and the “Island Party.”  The members also assisted with the pumpkin carving station at the Stonewall Pumpkin Festival at the Rochester Hills Museum, decorated Dinosaur Hill for the holidays, sold Daffodils for Dinosaur Hill in March, worked each of the Parisian Charity Sales and sponsored the Community Kitchen at the Rochester Community House in May.

During their busy year, RJWC also supported other location organizations and events; they attended the Sunrise Pinnacle awards and the Community Outlook Luncheon as well as “Luncheon on the Aisles” for Meadow Brook Theatre. They held a Bunco event to raise funds for the Relay for Life of Greater Rochester and participated in “Barb’s Battalion” bingo fundraiser for the Race for a Cure. And, they also attended the Women’s Fund Annual CommUNITY luncheon.

And, since RJWC doesn’t believe in “all work and no play” they did a few things just for the fun of it!  In the fall, club members built a scarecrow, “Josie the Junior” as part of the Rochester Hills Museum’s “Scarecrows in the City,” took cooking classes at Trevarrow, Inc and went to see “The Woman Of Lockerby” at Varner Hall at Oakland University. During the holiday season, they hosted a including a Cookie Exchange, attended the Meadow Brook Hall Holiday Walk and Luncheon and hosted a “Hands On Art Night” at Paint Creek Center for the Arts for the members and friends.  As the new year began, they went to the Rembrandt exhibit at the DIA, hosted a Health and Education night at Beaumont Health and Wellness Center and went to see “Grey Gardens” at Varner Hall. And, throughout the year they hosted a monthly book club.

And, at the end of their club year in June, they celebrated with a lovely dinner in the Christopher Wren dining room at Meadow Brook Hall where they installed their new Club President Jennifer Hyvari as well as their new club officers, welcomed 11 new members and presented their year end club awards.

As you can see, contributing to the growth and vitality of the community is the core of the Rochester Junior Woman’s Club! For more than 50 years they have contributed to the growth and vitality of the community through volunteer service and donation of funds to local charities and organizations. Over the years, RJWC has donated more than 1 million hours of community service and raised more than $790,000 to support the local community.

This coming year the club will be raising funds on behalf several local organizations for specific projects including Crittenton's new patient tower which will provide 87 private, state-of-the-art patient rooms equipped with the latest technology and highest standards of infection control, set in a therapeutic environment, Friends of the Rochester Hills Public Library’s whose main focus this year is to full implementation in the area of Early Literacy and Leader Dogs for the Blind who provides all clients services at no cost including a highly trained dog, travel to and from Leader Dog, and room and board.

RJWC is proud to be helping these great organizations. The first event is their 14th annual Lobster Boil which will be held on September 29, 2012 where live New England lobsters are flown in fresh and members of RJWC cook and wrap the lobsters and have them hot and ready as customers pick them up at the OPC drive-thru site.

The club is also planning two other events to raise funds for their recipients. The first event the club has planned to raise funds for the recipients will be held on January 26, 2013 at Meadow Brook Hall. The evening will include tours of the hall, a strolling gourmet dinner, music, dancing and a silent auction.  The club is also currently planning their annual “Spring Highlights” Luncheon and Shopping Boutique for March 23, 2013 at the Royal Park Hotel.

“The Library is honored to be one of the recipients of the Rochester Junior Women’s fundraising this year. Both organizations have strong commitments and long histories of service to the greater Rochester Area. Our two organizations are part of what makes Rochester the “Heart of the Hills,” Kathy Dorn, Friends of the Library President

Rochester Junior Woman’s Club Awards Scholarships
to Two Local Students

Rochester, Michigan
June 18
, 2012

Rochester Junior Woman’s Club (RJWC), along with the Greater Rochester Area Community Foundation, awarded Kendra Harding from Rochester Adams High School and Jenna Fedewa from Stoney Creek High School, both a $500 scholarship at the annual awards ceremony held May 22, 2012 at Stoney Creek High School Auditorium.

The Rochester Junior Woman’s Club Memorial Scholarship was established in 1994 to assist seniors from Rochester Community Schools. The recipients are selected based on their activities in community volunteerism and service during their high school careers as well as their overall grade point average.

Kendra Harding plans to pursue a major in Environmental Engineering at University of Notre Dame where she will attend this fall.  During high school she volunteered with the community service group Students Giving Back, an organization with the main goal of sponsoring the Rainbow Connection. She has also done volunteer work independently for the Rainbow Connection and has worked on various service projects through her church youth group.  Of all of her volunteer activities, her favorite has been as Vice President of Students Giving Back. “Directing a group of dedicated students and knowing that I am working to help one of my favorite charities has been a very rewarding way to spend my time,” said Harding. Kendra plans on continuing her volunteer work once she is at school in the fall. She hopes to get involved both with local community service and with an engineering service project that builds bridges in third world countries. She would also like to get involved with the group Engineers Without Borders in order to best use her skills to help others.I volunteer my time because as someone blessed with many privileges and opportunities I feel it is my duty to do so and because it brings a greater sense of fulfillment than any other accomplishment,” Harding said.

Jenna Fedewa will be attending Central Michigan University this fall where she plans on majoring in Elementary Education. In addition to her school activities, she has had many different volunteer projects in the community. She tutors twice a week at the Rochester Estates Mobile home park, has done several projects through Key Club and also created a non-profit project Rochester Rocket Readers; which has been her favorite volunteering project. Rochester Rocket Readers promotes early literacy in children ages 3-6 and emphasizes the importance of proficiency in reading. She started the program in the fall of her junior year after being selected by the principle Mr. Goralski.  In order to start the program she collected over 900 books by running a book drive in local businesses. The first event was on May 24th 2011and they were able to send every child home with 10 books. The Rochester Rocket Readers program now runs weekly in the clubhouse at the Rochester Estates Mobile Home Park where they have a story time, an activity and give every child a book to take home. While at college she plans to continue her volunteer work and is looking forward to volunteering with children. “I like to volunteer because it is extremely rewarding to improve the lives of others,” said Fedewa.

The Rochester Junior Woman’s Club would like to congratulate both of these well deserving individuals and wish them well as they begin this new phase of their lives in the fall.

Rochester Junior Woman’s Club had a Busy Year!

Rochester, Michigan
July 31, 2011

The Rochester Junior Woman’s Club has had a busy year! From September to June they donated more than $24,000.00 to charitable organizations, provided countless hours of hands-on volunteer hours, and had a little fun as well!

Their year kicked off in early September, when they participated in the Art and Apples festival where their signature Apple Blossoms and Fresh Squeezed Lemonade raised funds for the Paint Creek Center for the Arts. Then on September 25th they held their annual Lobster Boil where they sold more than 1300 lobsters and raised funds for Blessings in a Backpack, Rochester PTA Council’s Rachel’s Challenge Program and the Stoney Creek Schoolhouse Interpretation at the Rochester Hills Museum at Van Hoosen Farm and the OPC.  The end of the year brought their annual Christmas Auction which raised funds for Rochester Area Neighborhood House.

The members kicked off the New Year with their annual Card Party in February which raised funds for Crittenton Hospital’s Camisole Program. This was followed in March when they hosted their annual Ladies Luncheon and Shopping Boutique at the Royal Park Hotel, raising additional funds for the Blessings in a Backpack, Rochester PTA Council’s Rachel’s Challenge Program and the Stoney Creek Schoolhouse Interpretation at the Rochester Hills Museum at Van Hoosen Farm. In May, they presented two scholarships to area high school students through the Community Foundation of Greater Rochester. And, in June they finished their year by participating in the Rochester Relay for Life where they raised funds for the American Cancer Society.

But, that wasn’t all for the members of RJWC!  If all of the check writing didn’t keep them busy enough, they also provided countless hands-on hours to other local organizations including: hosting exhibition openings at Paint Creek Center for the Arts, serving meals and assisting a special events at the Older Persons Commission including their “Sock Hop”, “Island Party” and “Gangsters and Hot Babes” events.  The members also assisted with the pumpkin carving station at the Stonewall Pumpkin Festival at the Rochester Hills Museum, helped out at the Halloween Hoot at Dinosaur Hill, assisted shoppers at the Neighborhood House Christmas Shopping Program, decorated Dinosaur Hill for the holidays, sold Daffodils for Dinosaur Hill and sponsored the May Community Kitchen at the Rochester Community House.

During the busy year, RJWC also sponsored the Rochester Hills Arbor Day Tree planting at the School House at Rochester Hills Museum at Van Hoosen Farm, assisted South Oakland Shelter in their “Hope for the Holidays” toy drive program, modeled for the Village of Rochester Hills Fashion Show benefiting Meadow Brook Hall, supported “Barb’s Battalion” bingo fundraiser for the Race for a Cure, participated in the Parisian Charity Sales and modeled for the Green Living Festival.

And, since RJWC doesn’t believe in “all work - no play” they did a few things just for the fun of it!  They built a scarecrow, “Josie the Junior” as part of the Rochester Hills Museum’s “Scarecrows in the City,” attended the Sunrise Pinnacle awards, hosted a Spa night, put on a Progressive Dinner for the members and their significant others, they attended the Community Outlook Luncheon, took a self defense class, hosted a monthly book club, took a stained glass class, attended Luncheon on the Aisles for Meadow Brook Theatre, celebrated their 55th anniversary and ended the year with a lovely dinner at Meadow Brook Hall.

As you can see, contributing to the growth and vitality of the community is the core of the Rochester Junior Woman’s Club! Founded in 1956, they currently have approximately eighty women who are committed to serving the needs of the community.

For over 50 years the Rochester Junior Woman's Club has contributed to the growth and vitality of the community through volunteer service and donation of funds to local charities and organizations. Since its inception, the Rochester Junior Woman’s Club has donated more than 1 million hours of community service and raised more than $760,000 to support the local community.

Rochester Junior Woman’s Club Awards Scholarships
to Two Local Students

Rochester, Michigan
July 18, 2011

Rochester Junior Woman’s Club (RJWC), along with the Greater Rochester Area Community Foundation, awarded Valerie Adams from Stoney Creek High School and Martha Troy from Rochester High School, both a $500 scholarship at the annual awards ceremony held May 24, 2011 at Stoney Creek High School Auditorium.

The Rochester Junior Woman’s Club Memorial Scholarship was established in 1994 to assist seniors from Rochester Community Schools. The recipients are selected based on their activities in community volunteerism and service during their high school careers as well as their overall grade point average.

Valerie Adams plans to pursue a major in kinesiology and double minor in business and environmental science at Saginaw Valley State University where she will attend this fall.  During high school she participated in a wide variety of service that has focused on aiding many different groups. Some activities included participating in the annual CROP walk and Relay for Life, she volunteered hours at school, coordinating and mediating with various organizations to solidify volunteer opportunities for Key Club members as well as with the National Honors Society. She volunteers weekly at the First Congregational Church of Romeo as a church school teacher and “shepherd," she has made fleece blankets to send to the Lighthouse of Oakland County, made holiday greeting cards for people in the Romeo community, raked leaves of the homes of the elderly in her community. And, she has worked diligently with the head of the "Senior Giveback" at Stoney Creek High School to raise money for the Heifer Project International. Of all of the volunteer activities, her favorite is working with the church school children at her church. “Whether it be teaching a class or serving as a “shepherd" to the kids, I love building a relationship with them and watching as they learn life lessons and morals that they will carry with them through their life. The lessons taught and absorbed by the children in church are not bible-specific but are general concepts and ideas to be used to guide one's life. My heart is warmed to see them exhibit these ideal characteristics such as compassion, sharing, forgiveness, etc... I am blessed to have the opportunity to work with such wonderful beings. It may seem that I am the one helping them, however, I learn a tremendous deal from the kids as well” Adams said. Valerie plans on continuing her volunteer work once she is at school in the fall and hopes to continue working with children in some way. It is also important to her to volunteer time toward preserving the environment as the health of the Earth. “I am extraordinarily blessed in my life and I am very grateful for that. I recognize that not everyone has the same opportunities as I do and it is the least I can do to give back in some way. The emotional reward that comes hand in hand with volunteering is very fulfilling as well. It warms my heart to see the lives or situations of others improved and that, in turn, improves my mood and outlook on life and the world.” Adams said.

Martha Troy will be attending the College of James Madison at Michigan State University this fall. She plans on majoring in comparative cultures and politics, with a minor or double major in Spanish.  In addition to her school activities, she has been involved in volunteer work through Rochester's National Honor Society and through her church. She has found all of her volunteer activities rewarding, but after playing softball competitively through out the nation for years, one of the most rewarding things has been being able to come back and teach kids basic skills. “I've loved running camps and clinics with my travel organization. Even though it may just be teaching a 12 year old how to pitch, it makes a difference. It gives these young girls someone to look up to, something to work for, and a means of learning hard-work and dedication,” says Troy.   While at college she plans to continue her volunteer work and is looking forward to the opportunities that present themselves at Michigan State.  She is looking forward to participating in Habitat for Humanity and joining a youth group dedicated to public service. “If such an opportunity comes my way, I'd like to study abroad in a Spanish speaking country and teach English as a second language there,” says Troy. When asked why she volunteers, she responded “I volunteer because I like to see the changes one can make. I'm a people person.  I like working with people, helping people, and learning from people. Volunteering allows me to do all three!”

The Rochester Junior Woman’s Club would like to congratulate both of these well deserving individuals and wish them well as they begin this new phase of their lives in the fall.
