Rochester Junior Woman’s Club Awards
Rochester,
Michigan Rochester Junior Woman’s Club (RJWC), along with the Greater Rochester Area Community Foundation, awarded Richard Parks from Adams High School and Elizabeth Gojcaj of Stoney Creek High School, both a $500 scholarship at the annual awards ceremony held May 18, 2010 at Stoney Creek High School Auditorium. The Rochester Junior Woman’s Club Memorial Scholarship was established in 1994 to assist seniors from Rochester Community Schools. The recipients are selected based on their activities in community volunteerism and service during their high school careers as well as their overall grade point average. Richard Parks plans to pursue a Major in Pre-Med at the University of Michigan this fall. During high school he was in the National Honor Society, Key Club and Business Professionals of America. Richard also was a member of the Varsity Basketball Team and JV Team. He also found a passion to serve and give back to his community. He volunteers with his church, mostly in the Detroit area at the Detroit Medical Center, Neighborwoods Tree Planting and Gleaners Food Bank as well as other volunteer activities. His favorite is the tree planting as it requires the most hands on work. He is active in his Church Youth Group. His strong work ethic has made it possible for him to manage his busy schedule while maintaining very good grades in a highly competitive high school environment. In one of the letters of recommendation, his “teachable heart” was noted enabling him to be “humble, obedient and always willing to learn.” Richard plans on continuing his volunteer work once he is at U of M in the fall. Many of his friends in Pre-Med enjoy volunteering at the hospital so he is looking forward to that as well as finding a church to continue the types of volunteer work he has done at home. “I am a strong Christian and I enjoy helping others that are in need just by doing little things especially when I know they need it. Also I volunteer my time because I love my youth group and helping others” say Parks. Elizabeth Gojcaj will be attending Oakland University with plans for a major in finance. While at Stoney Creek High School she was a member of National Honor Society, Key Club, Honor Roll, and Rochester United J.V. Lacrosse. In addition to school activities, she has volunteered with Invisible Children, Relay for Life, served as a Hugger Elementary School Student Helper and been active in St. Paul’s Albanian Church community service activities. She has found all of her volunteer activities as rewarding in their own way, but her favorite was holding a benefit concert for Invisible Children with other group members in order to raise money for the children in Uganda. “Knowing that the concert would help so many helpless and deprived youth made me feel useful in the world, even if its one small step at a time” says Gojcaj. At Oakland University she plans to continue her volunteer work; she understands the importance of volunteering and making time for it, both at St. Paul's Albanian Church as well as discovering new volunteering opportunities. “When a community gives so much in order to benefit the lives of others, it is important to give back and help out. It is also essential to help those around the world who are not able to help themselves. It's a wonderful feeling being a part of creating a better life for others; a feeling that everyone should obtain at least once in their lives”, says Gojcaj. The Rochester Junior Woman’s Club would like to congratulate both of these well deserving individuals and wish them well as they begin this new phase of their lives in the fall. RJWC has been serving the community since 1956.
