Gil's layout is distinctive as it is one large yard. It contains a 6 track double ended freight yard, 5 track passenger station, complete steam engine service facilities, and an interchange with a narrow gauge railroad. Connected to the yard are two industrial switching area. Return loops on each end allow for continuous running and contain multi-tracked staging yards.
During operating sessions, one yard master manages the yard while road crews bring trains in and out of staging and operate the local switchers. Passenger trains involve a carefully planned ballet as the road crew switches out the head end cars while the yard swaps out the dinner from the rear of the train.
Gil plans to expand the narrow gauge railroad into an area above one of the staging yards.
