The Rochester Hills Public Library is pleased to offer specialized resources for our customers learning English as a second language (ESL), achieving citizenship, improving basic literacy / reading skills, and speaking and reading in a language other than English.

English students
International Language Collection
The Adult International Language Collection includes books of fiction and non-fiction by many popular authors in the following world languages. If you wish to read in a language other than what we have in the collection you will be able to borrow from another library through Interlibrary Loan.

Polish Russian Spanish Tamil Telugu Vietnamese
Rochester, Rochester Hills and Oakland Township Library card holders will be able to request books in many other languages if they are available to borrow by going to Michigan eLibrary / MelCat (the statewide library catalog and borrowing service). Select the language in Advanced Keyword Search.

The Youth World Language Collection is available in print as well as audio; videocassette, DVD, talking books and multimedia kits in either CD or cassette format. Languages include:

World Cinema Collection
Our World Cinema Collection has a large number of DVDs with outstanding award winning and popular feature films from around the world in the following languages and they all have English subtitles!

World Cinema Collection is a shared collection by the three Metro Net libraries Rochester Hills, West Bloomfield and Farmington. Each of these three participating libraries is housing a part of this rotating collection and can be interloaned among these libraries if they are available to check out. If you are interested in learning another language there are many language learning materials available in books, audio and video formats.

Citizenship Preparation
The citizenship collection provides materials to guide prospective U.S. citizens through the naturalization process. A collection of online resources for citizenship preparation, practical information on life in the United States and immigration law, news, and procedures is available on the Immigrant Resources topic page.

This ELL Conversation Group provides beginning and intermediate level students an opportunity to practice English in a friendly setting with other international speakers.

English as a Second Language (ELL) Collections
There are ESL and basic Literacy Collections in the Outreach Department for adults who are trying to improve their reading or English language skills. Books, audio tapes, DVDs and some CD-ROMs are available to check out, and many Literacy Resources are available on the Internet.

With over 1,300 hours of instruction, ELLIS combines digital audio and video, voice recording, role-play and native language support to create an engaging learning environment for every level of English language training.

Newcomer's Book Club: ELL discussion group
Please join other newcomers from all over the world as they explore English literature together in this fun and rewarding group.

Self Checks
Customers can easily checkout all types of library materials on the self-check units. Directions for checking out materials are currently available in English, Spanish, German, Tamil and Russian with more languages coming soon.
