Video Games - Frequently Asked Questions

Below you will find a list of commonly asked questions in regards to our video game collection.

  • Q: I used to get a certain game at the library all the time, and now you don't have it anymore. What gives?

    A: It probably broke, got worn out, or was never returned to the library. We're not able to replace all of the games that break or get lost, especially if they're for older systems like Gamecube, Gameboy Advance, Xbox, or even PS2.

  • Q: Will you ever start an adult videogame collection?

    A: As of January 2014, we have a brand new collection of M rated games available on the bottom shelf of the Adult Graphic Novel collection. So far it's just a little collection, but stay tuned as we add more titles!

  • Q: Why do you have so many games rated T for Teen?

    A: Because it's a teen collection! It was started using the input and suggestions of teens who come to the library. We do get quite a few games rated E and E10, but the focus audience for the collection is teenagers!

  • Q: Do you have any educational videogames at the library?

    A: Yes! Check out this list.

  • Q: Why are some of your PSP games in weird looking clear cartridges?

    A: PSP game cartridges break often, so we replace them with stronger ones so you can still play the disc. They look a little different, but they work great!

  • Q: I want you guys to get a game you don't have. What do I do?

    A: Head on over here and fill out a request card! Fill Out Request Form

  • Q: Couldn't I just try fixing the game myself?

    A: Please don't. We have some tried-and-true methods of fixing things here that we'd like to try first. We especially don't want any tape on the games or game cartridges.

  • Q: I checked out a game and it doesn't work. Grr! Also, what should I do?

    A: We hate it when this happens, too! It's so frustrating. The best thing to do is let us know when you return the game. Either put a note in the game box when you return it, or return it to someone at the circulation desk and tell them the problem. That way, we can try to fix it or buy a new copy so this won't happen so often. You can also put a hold on the next available copy. So sorry!

  • Q: How many games can I take out at one time?

    A: Ten.

  • Q: This is a library. Why do you even have videogames here?

    A: The library serves to educate, but also to entertain! Videogames are fun. Also, studies have shown that they help build skills in the areas of reading, problem solving, and critical thinking. Some games are educational or even provide exercise. Finally, we believe that games can be a great way to bring family and friends together.

  • Q: Where are the games located?

    A: The game cases are on the second floor in the teen area. Bring the case to the check-out desk downstairs to receive the game disc. Because of this, you cannot check out videogames using our self-check machines.

  • Q: How long can I keep videogames I've checked out? What are the fines?

    A: Videogames check out for one week at a time. You can renew a game if no one else has a hold on it. If you're late returning your games, you will be fined $1 a day.
