Next to the 100 books is the Peek-A-Book collection. The Peek-A-Books are featured on our Peek-A-Book kiosk and change often.

board_book_stickerBoard Books are primarily enjoyed by the earliest of pre-readers and the people who are guiding them on their reading journey. Board books are shelved by the first letter of the author's last name. Also near the board books are free materials to help parents and caregivers encourage early literacy learning, and the creative play activities to inspire the love of learning.

Book and CD/Cassette Kits are in the brightly colored bags hanging across the aisle from the board books. The color of the bag indicates the type of book inside:

youthkitsPink - picture books
Blue - non-fiction
Yellow - folklore & fairytales
Teal- early readers (in the "Readers" area)
Red - holiday stories

leapfrog_winceAlso included in the kit collection are dark green bags containing the LeapFrog, Leapster and Tag Reader units and cartridges for each of the different learning systems. For more information on LeapFrog material and how it works visit www.leapfrog.com.

parent_stickerThe Parent-Teacher Collection has resources parents and teachers will find invaluable. You will also find Story Kits here. These bright blue bags stuffed full of books and fun material make it easy to take a number of related materials and create your own lessons, or even a storytime at home! New to this area is a collection of oversized picture books that you are welcome to check out.

nonfic_stickerNon-fiction materials are found on the tall shelves along the north side of the room, near the windows. This collection is arranged according to the Dewey Decimal System, which assigns a number to a book based on its content. This means that books containing information on the same subject are shelved together. The books in the Non-fiction collection are intended for all users through grade 8. While not every book will apply to your reading level or interest level, there is sure to be one that's right for you. Also, you will find any VHS and DVD recording related to your Non-fiction subject intermixed with the books on these shelves.

Top

science_experimentsThe Science Experiment collection, is identified by its bright green sticker. This is a great area for browsing, especially around science scoutingfair time!

The Scouting collection is a small but useful collection of scouting handbooks, songbooks and badge manuals for various scouting groups.

Top

world_languageThe World Language Collection features materials that are either completely bilingual or are translations of stories into languages other than their original. Look at the spine labels to find the language you want. You will also find Book and CD/Cassette kits hanging in purple bags, DVD's and VHS recordings on the shelves with the books.

Top

bio_stickerA special collection of books that are part of non-fiction are the Biographies, found near the big green crayon. They are arranged by the last name of the person the book is about. There are biographies that are "Readers" for those just learning to read, and biographies for those in middle school.

Top

fic_talking_stickerThe Fiction Talking Book aisle features books on CD, cassette and Playaways. Titles can be found by searching by the last name of the author. Talking books are a great way to pass the time in the car, and they help  readers get through a difficult or long book.

Top

video_stickerAtop the next shelves sit Theo and Cleo, stars of Between the Lions, who provide an excellent landmark for family entertainment movies. This section houses the DVD and VHS versions of movies, including the new "Quick Flicks" collection, (identified by their pink 3-day sticker).  These are DVD's that will check out for 3 days and cannot be renewed but are holdable through the catalog. Movies are alphabetized by their title.  Non-fiction DVD's (an example would be a DVD about the planet Mars) are shelved in the non-fiction area.

Top

middle_school_labelThe Middle School area contains fiction books appropriate for readers in grades 5-8, due to more sophisticated content. Please note that there is some overlap between the Middle School and Teen collections, and all reading choices should be discussed by the reader and their caregiver. Middle school talking books are housed at the end of the section are are alphabetized by the author's last name.  Large Print middle school books are also shelved in this area.

Top

cdcover_winceThe Music CD collection has a variety of music, even catering to those older listeners through age 10. Look for your CD by the last name of the artist or the name of the group you would like to hear.

Top

ill_fiction_stickerIllustrated Fiction is an interesting collection chock-full of picture books for older readers, or for caregivers and teachers who are looking for great read-alouds. The illustrations are outstanding and there is significantly more text than in a "picture book."

Top

The Reader Collection is especially for those students who are beginning to read on their own. Each book has a colored dot on the spine, indicating its difficulty level:

reader_stickerBlue - phonics oriented
Red - easiest, few words per page
Yellow - moderate difficulty
Green- most difficult, longer stories
Teal Bags- reader kits (book & CD)

Please note that the dots refer to reading ability not grade level, as children learn to read at different rates. Help your child choose a book at a level he or she is comfortable with, and move on when he or she feels ready to jump to the next color.

Top

fiction_stickerFiction holds chapter books for independent readers in grades 2-5. Fiction books are generally shelved by the author's last name, though if several authors have contributed to a series you will find it under the series title (e.g. Magic Tree House books are shelved under Osborne while American Girl books are shelved under American Girl).  Large Print materials are also shelved in this area.

Top

mystery_stickerMaking a U-shape around the back of the Fiction area is the Mystery collection for students in grades 2-6. These are shelved in order by the author's last name.  There are also mystery stories in the Middle School collection, and they have a purple sticker on them (with a magnifying glass).

Top

gn_stickerNear the fiction shelves is the Comics and Graphic Novel area. These separate formats are distinguished by their spine stickers. Keep in mind that the content and difficulty of these may be more appropriate for students reading on their own, and should not be confused with picture books. The format lends itself to assisting more visual learners to enjoy reading, and it should not be assumed that the story is appropriate for young children. As always, take some time to evaluate your child's reading choice and discuss it with him or her.

Top

fft_stickerSitting center stage in the youth room is the Folklore and Fairytale collection. This collection features classic tales from all over the world and is shelved by the Dewey Decimal number of the country of origin.  If you're looking for a good set of tales, visit these shelves!

Top

reference_stickerThe Reference Collection contains a wealth of material so valuable it stays in the library all the time! In fact, anything you see with a bright yellow Reference sticker can be used within the library, but cannot be checked out. These items include the most recent encyclopedias, dictionaries, record books, and other collections of materials that cannot be found elsewhere.

Top

holiday_stickerNext is the Holiday Books shelf. These are holiday stories and are arranged according to the school year, so fall holidays come first, with summer holidays rounding out the shelves on the other side.  Be aware that the month before a holiday, the books only circulate for 1 week.

Top

magazine_stickerAlong the perimeter, starting near the fish tank, you will find magazines (past issues can be checked out for 7 days).  A few magazines, like Mailbox cannot be checked out, just used in the library.

Top

caldecott_stickerThere is a Caldecott and Newbery reference collection.  Most of these books can also be found in other parts of the collection.  There is a reference collection of Pop-up books and a section dedicated to materials in Braille in this area.  Youth Large Print materials are shelved alongside the traditional print materials.
