Great Lakes Island Escapes at the Rochester Hills Public Library

(ROCHESTER HILLS- April 20, 2017) Many think that an island vacation is in a distant location out in the ocean, but many neglect how we have our own island life here in Michigan. To highlight these getaways, the Rochester Hills Public Library is hosting a talk on Great Lakes Island Escapes on Thursday, May 25 at 7 p.m.

Author of the book Great Lakes Island Escapes: Ferries and Bridges to Adventure, Maureen Dunphy visited 135 islands in the Great Lakes Basin. Of those, she has chosen 30 of her favorites along with 50 additional islands for you to explore.

“Most believe they have to go to the Caribbean or Hawaii to experience island life,” says Dunphy, “but Michigan’s well-kept secret is the amount of islands and vacations you can have without leaving the state.”

Having done the research, Dunphy’s book and expertise has led to her earning the 2017 Michigan Notable Book award by the Library of Michigan. Her research highlights transportation to each island, expectations once you arrive, the history, and the best attractions to see.

“Everyone could use a good vacation every now and then,” says Community Relations Specialist Amanda Harrison Keighley, “yet so many have a hard time planning a getaway. Let us help you by coming to this program and planning your own Great Lakes Island Escape.”

Registration is available online for this event at calendar.rhpl.org. Sign up in advance as space will be limited.
