Rochester Hills Public Library will be hosting a Human Library on Saturday, February 28, 2026, as an official Publishing Partner of The Human Library Organization. RHPL is asking for Human Books to apply this Fall to share their story.
The Human Library works with organizations like RHPL to create safe places to challenge misconceptions about people, promote understanding, and prevent conflict and division. The organization has worked in 85 countries for 25 years, and provides resources to ensure that Human Libraries work in and for their own community.
A public library is the perfect place to have open, non-judgmental conversations to learn what brings us together, and to challenge what drives us apart.
“RHPL is proud to partner with this international organization to promote open communication and understanding among members of our community.” Said Betsy Raczkowski, Head of Communications and Engagement. “We feel that a public library is the perfect place to have open, non-judgmental conversations to learn what brings us together, and to challenge what drives us apart.”

To stock our bookshelf, RHPL is asking for Books to apply this Fall to share their story. Books are people who volunteer to represent a stigmatized group in the community, and based on their personal experiences, answer questions from readers to help challenge assumptions or beliefs about that particular group. The purpose of the Human Library is not to further a political platform or mission, but to enable individuals to speak about their own lived experience.
To learn more about the organization and to apply, visit rhpl.org/humanlibrary. If selected after an interview process, Books will attend training and be published at the Human Library at RHPL in February. Applications close on Monday, November 3.
