Moving abroad, learning a new language, and immersing yourself in a new culture are challenges many in our community experience. With that in mind, our English Language Learners (ELL) Conversation Group and ELL Book Clubs provide a safe and fun place for our patrons to practice their English. Speaking a new language out loud is difficult. Practicing among patient, encouraging people helps build confidence.
In our ELL Conversation Group, we talk about everyday topics that help people feel more confident using English. We share our holidays, hobbies, and funny misunderstandings that happen when learning a new language.
One of the most exciting parts of our program is getting out into the community. We occasionally take field trips that allow learners to practice English in real-life settings. We have visited Leader Dogs for the Blind, taken walks along the Paint Creek Trail, and met up for coffee at a local restaurant. Our favorite part of the group is the potluck at the end of each session, where we not only share customs but also foods from other cultures.
Our ELL Book Clubs add another layer to the learning experience. We select accessible, interesting books that spark discussion without feeling overwhelming. We read out loud in class to work on pronunciation, build vocabulary, and give everyone a chance to speak in a supportive environment. Sometimes we get off topic and talk about a show we enjoyed on Netflix or a real-life situation that has come up at home.
Our groups are more than language programs. They bring people together, build confidence, and remind us that learning English can be joyful, social, and empowering. Everyone is welcome, just as they are, and every voice matters.
